A special evening of strings and solo bassoon, this concert will leave you reflecting on the themes of The Five Variants of Dives & Lazarus by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Adam Schoenberg’s Breath, written during COVID and deeply personal Metamorphosen by Richard Strauss. We will also spotlight the Amarillo Symphony’s principal bassoonist Conor Bell with Connor Chee’s Concert for Bassoon. Marvel at the sonority of sound as George Jackson leads our strings in an evening of all the emotions.

Bringing our back-line trumpets to the front, we’re thrilled to have Bill Takacs and David Lough present the double trumpet concertos of Manfredini and Vivaldi. Keeping the doubled theme, soloists Annie Chalex Boyle on violin and pianist Daniel del Pino will perform the intensely paced Mendelssohn, Double concerto for violin, piano and strings, with Lubbock Symphony Orchestra conductor David Cho! Cap off this wonderful concert of the new year with works of Britten and Handel, where David will charm us with the harpsichord!

You’ll also enjoy Haydn’s charm and humor as we perform his most beloved Piano Trio in f-sharp minor, written for and dedicated to wealthy British widow Rebecca Schroeter, all at the beautiful new Amarillo Area Foundation.

Our opening season concert is one of collaborative arts and community as we rally around the mighty, Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky. Presenting the original version of this amazing work and following the symphony’s performance of Ravel’s transcription just a few weeks before, we will be joined by Sunset in the Arts, both in a juried presentation by local artists reflecting Viktor Hartmann’s original themes and on location in this incredible art colony. Featuring artist Rick Rowley on piano, Aaron Merritt on cello and returning violinist Michelle Skinner, this evening will also feature works of Debussy, iconic American composer Jessie Montgomery, and Shostakovich.
